A series of leaked snapshots and datamined assets suggest Minecraft 1.22 will introduce one of the most visually striking biomes in the game's history. Dubbed the Volcanic Depths by the community, the new underground biome features magma rivers, basalt formations, and a unique ambient lighting system that casts an orange glow across cave walls.

Two new hostile mobs appear in the leaked files. The Ember Crawler is a spider-like creature that traverses lava without taking damage and shoots fireballs at players who get too close. The Magma Sentinel is a larger, golem-type mob that guards volcanic ore deposits and has a ground-slam attack capable of knocking players into lava pools. Both mobs drop new crafting materials used to create heat-resistant armor and tools.

On the block side, the leak reveals Volcanic Glass, a translucent decorative block that emits a faint red light. Charite, a new stone variant, can be polished into slabs and stairs for builders who want a dark, industrial aesthetic. Sulfur deposits scattered throughout the biome serve as the primary ingredient for a new explosive — the Sulfur Charge — which deals more damage than TNT but has a smaller blast radius.

Mojang has not officially confirmed any of these features, and leaked content is always subject to change before release. However, the sheer volume of assets and the level of polish on the textures suggest this content is well into development. If accurate, Minecraft 1.22 could launch alongside Minecraft Live later this year, giving players a major reason to dive back underground after the cave-focused updates of recent years.
